About the festival

Aadi Pooram marks the birth star of Andal, the Tamil Vaishnava poet-saint, and is celebrated as her birthday.^1,2

Tradition holds that Andal was found as an infant in a tulasi garden at Srivilliputhur and raised by the saint Periyalvar (Periyazhwar).^1,2,3

The principal celebration is at the Srivilliputhur Andal Temple, where thousands attend; the deities Andal and Rangamannar are carried in palanquins to the temple car for the car festival (ther).^4,5

By custom, ceremonial offerings (seer) are sent each year from the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple to Srivilliputhur ahead of the car festival.⁵

When it falls: Aadi Pooram falls in the Tamil month of Aadi on the day of the Pooram (Purva Phalguni) nakshatra, the star under which a traditional verse places Andal's birth.^1,2
