About the festival

Aadi Pooram marks the birth star of Andal, the Tamil Vaishnava poet-saint, and is celebrated as her birthday.1,2

Tradition holds that Andal was found as an infant in a tulasi garden at Srivilliputhur and raised by the saint Periyalvar (Periyazhwar).1,2,3

The principal celebration is at the Srivilliputhur Andal Temple, where thousands attend; the deities Andal and Rangamannar are carried in palanquins to the temple car for the car festival (ther).4,5

By custom, ceremonial offerings (seer) are sent each year from the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple to Srivilliputhur ahead of the car festival.5

When it falls: Aadi Pooram falls in the Tamil month of Aadi on the day of the Pooram (Purva Phalguni) nakshatra, the star under which a traditional verse places Andal's birth.1,2
