What you will find here

How the timings are calculated

Every timing on this site is calculated, not copied from a printed almanac. We use the Drik method: the actual positions of the Sun and Moon, computed with the Swiss Ephemeris, in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa. The panchang day runs from sunrise to the next sunrise at the city you have selected.

Tamil dates (the Tamil month and day) follow the traditional Vakya reckoning used by Tamil almanacs, so, for example, Pongal falls on Thai 1. Where our Vakya table does not yet cover a date, the Tamil date is calculated with the Drik method and marked “(Drik)”.

Festival and vrat dates follow the Tamil Nadu calendar, and government holidays follow the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette. For cities outside Tamil Nadu, the timings on each page are local, but a temple or community there may occasionally observe a festival a day apart.

A note on traditions

Traditional Vakya almanacs can also place a tithi or nakshatra change a little differently from the Drik timings used here. For a ritual, a wedding or any important event, please confirm the timing with your family priest or temple.
