About the festival

Aadi Perukku, held on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Aadi, honours rivers and water at the time of year when monsoon flows raise river levels.^1,2,3

Devotees, especially women and newly married couples, gather on the banks of the Kaveri (Cauvery) and other rivers to offer prayers to the river.²

Offerings traditionally include turmeric threads, flowers, and rice placed on banana leaves, and some devotees take a holy dip.^1,2

When it falls: Aadi Perukku falls on the 18th day of the Tamil solar month of Aadi, which begins when the Sun enters the sidereal sign Karka (Cancer).^1,2,3
