About the festival
Vaikunta Ekadashi is an observance of the god Vishnu, kept especially by Vaishnavas.1
On this day Vishnu temples open a special northern gate, the Paramapada Vasal or Sorgavasal (gate of Vaikuntha), and devotees believe that passing through it leads to Vaikuntha.1,2
At the Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam the celebrations span about 20 days, divided into Pagal Pathu and Ira Pathu.1
Many devotees fast on the day and spend it in prayer.1
When it falls: Vaikunta Ekadashi is the Ekadashi (eleventh lunar day) of the bright fortnight in the Tamil solar month of Margazhi (Dhanu).1,3
