About the festival

Ugadi (Yugadi) is the Hindu new-year festival of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka; in Maharashtra and Goa the same day is observed as Gudi Padwa.^1,2

Customary observances include an oil bath, new clothes, rangoli designs, mango-leaf torana decorations and a temple or community reading of the new year's almanac (panchanga sravanam).^1,2

A signature dish, ugadi pachadi, mixes neem flowers, jaggery, tamarind, raw mango and other flavours; in Karnataka a neem-and-jaggery mixture called bevu-bella is also eaten on the day.^1,2

When it falls: Ugadi falls on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra (March–April), which begins the year in the amanta (new-moon-ending) lunar calendar followed in these states.^1,2
