About the festival
Thai Poosam is a festival of Murugan held in the Tamil month of Thai, on the day of the Poosam (Pushya) star around the full moon.1
Temple tradition links it to the vel (spear) that Parvati gave Murugan to defeat the demon Surapadman.1
Many devotees fast beforehand and carry kavadis, decorated arches that sometimes hold pots of milk, to Murugan temples.1,2
Tamil Nadu Tourism describes it as the most important festival of the Dhandayuthapani Swamy temple at Palani.2
When it falls: Thai Poosam falls in the Tamil month of Thai at the full moon, on the day of the Poosam (Pushya) nakshatra; some sources describe it simply as the full-moon day of Thai.1,2
