About the festival
Saraswathi Pooja honours Saraswati, the goddess of learning and the arts, on the ninth day (Navami) of Navaratri.1,2,3
Books, musical instruments and tools are placed before the goddess, often at the Golu, and are left untouched until the next day, Vijayadashami.1,2
In Tamil Nadu the day is also observed as Ayudha Pooja: tools, machines and even computers are worshipped, and vehicles are washed, decorated and blessed.1,2
The following day, Vijayadashami, is traditionally considered a good day to begin learning, when young children are guided to write for the first time.1
When it falls: Saraswathi Pooja is observed on the ninth day (Navami) of Navaratri, the Shukla Navami of the lunar month Ashvin, in September or October.1,2,4
