About the festival
Rama Navami celebrates the birth of Rama, the hero of the Ramayana, revered as the seventh avatar of Vishnu.1,2
It is observed in homes and temples with worship of Rama's image, fasting, recitation of the Ramayana and devotional singing, and sometimes by placing an image of the infant Rama in a cradle.1,2
In southern India the day is also treated as the wedding anniversary of Rama and Sita, and temples conduct a symbolic wedding ceremony (kalyanotsavam).1,2
When it falls: Rama Navami falls on Navami, the ninth day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Navami) of the lunar month Chaitra, in March or April.1,2
