About the festival
Raksha Bandhan is a family festival, observed mainly though not only by Hindus of north India, that celebrates the bond between sisters and brothers.1,2
A sister ties a thread bracelet called a rakhi on her brother's wrist and they exchange sweets; the ritual is traditionally understood as a bond of mutual protection, with emphasis on the brother protecting the sister.1,2
When it falls: Raksha Bandhan falls on the full moon (Purnima) of the lunar month Shravana, usually in August.1
