About the festival
Panguni Uthiram is held in Panguni (March-April), the last month of the Tamil year, and in temple tradition marks several divine weddings, including those of Shiva and Parvati and of Rama and Sita.1,2
In many Tamil Nadu temples it ends a ten-day festival with a wedding ceremony (thirukalyanam) of the deities on the final day.1,2
At the Palani Murugan temple the festival lasts ten days; its main event is the divine wedding (thirukalyanam) of Muthukumaraswamy with Valli and Deivanai, followed on Panguni Uthiram day by a chariot procession (therottam) on the street around the hill.3
When it falls: Panguni Uthiram falls in the Tamil month of Panguni on the day of the Uthiram (Uttara Phalguni) nakshatra, which usually coincides with or falls near the full moon.1,2
