About the festival
Maasi Magam is a festival of ritual bathing held in the Tamil month of Maasi (February-March).1,2
Processional images of deities from many temples are carried to the sea, rivers or temple tanks for a ceremonial immersion known as theerthavari, and devotees bathe at the same time.1,2,3
At Kumbakonam, deities from several temples are brought to the Mahamaham tank, where tens of thousands of devotees bathe.1,3
In Puducherry, deities from many shrines in the Union Territory and neighbouring Tamil Nadu districts are placed on the seashore at Vaithikuppam for worship after their immersion in the sea.2
When it falls: Maasi Magam falls in the Tamil month of Maasi on the day of the Magam (Magha) nakshatra, which coincides with the full moon; some sources describe it simply as the full-moon day of Maasi.1,2
