About the festival
Karadaiyan Nombu is a vow observed by Tamil women, traditionally for the long life and welfare of their husbands; unmarried women may also observe it.1,2
It is associated with the story of Savitri, who is said to have won back her husband Satyavan's life from Yama, the god of death.1,2
Observers fast, draw kolam, and offer the goddess a sweet adai made of rice flour and jaggery; by legend, Savitri offered this dish with unsalted butter to Yama.1,2
Women tie a yellow sacred thread (saradu) around the neck as part of the observance.1,2
When it falls: Karadaiyan Nombu is observed as the Tamil month of Masi ends and Panguni begins.1,2
