About the festival
Holika Dahan is the bonfire lit on the eve of Holi, recalling the Puranic story of the Vishnu devotee Prahlada and his aunt Holika, who perished in the fire.1,2
It is held on Choti Holi, the day before the colour festival, and the story is described as symbolising the triumph of good over evil.1,2
When it falls: Holika Dahan takes place on the night before Holi, whose timing is tied to the full moon of Phalguna.1,2
