About the festival
Holi is a Hindu spring festival celebrated in India and Nepal and by South Asian communities in other countries.1
Its best-known custom is people throwing coloured powder (gulal) and coloured water at one another, after which they bathe, change into clean clothes and visit friends and relatives.1,2
On the evening before, a bonfire known as Holika Dahan is lit.1,2
When it falls: Holi is tied to the full moon (Purnima) of the lunar month Phalguna, which falls in February or March, and the Holika Dahan bonfire is lit the night before the day of colour play.1,2
