About the festival
Ganesh Visarjan is the ritual immersion of Ganesha images in water that closes the Vinayaka Chaturthi festival; tradition describes it as Ganesha's return to his parents' abode on Mount Kailash.1,2
Households may immerse their images after one and a half, three, five or seven days according to family custom, while larger public installations are often kept until Ananta Chaturdashi and taken to the water in processions with music and chanting.1,3,4
In Tamil Nadu, pandal images are immersed in the sea or other water bodies, and state pollution-control guidelines permit only images made of clay and other natural materials, immersed at sites notified by the district administration.2,5,6
When it falls: The final public immersion is traditionally held on Ananta Chaturdashi, the fourteenth day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Chaturdashi) of Bhadrapada, ten days after Vinayaka Chaturthi, although household immersions take place on earlier odd-numbered days.1,2,4
