About the festival
Easter is the chief feast of the Christian year, at which Christians celebrate their belief that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion.1,2
In Catholic practice the Resurrection is proclaimed at the solemn Easter Vigil, held on the night of Holy Saturday.2
When it falls: In Western churches Easter is the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon falling on or after 21 March (a fixed stand-in for the spring equinox), a method associated with the Council of Nicaea (325), so it always falls between 22 March and 25 April.1,3
