About the festival
Arudhra Darisanam (Thiruvathirai) honours Nataraja, the dancing form of the god Shiva, and his cosmic dance.1
A major celebration is held at the Thillai Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram, which holds a ten-day festival with special poojas, an abhishekam of the deities and a chariot procession.1
Shiva temples take out processions of Nataraja and his consort Sivakami, and a sweet dish of rice, jaggery and lentils called Thiruvathirai kali is offered to Nataraja.1
When it falls: Arudhra Darisanam falls in the Tamil month of Margazhi on the day of the Thiruvathirai (Ardra) nakshatra, usually close to the full moon of that month.1,2
