About the festival
Akshaya Tritiya is a Hindu and Jain spring festival whose name means the 'imperishable' third day, and it is associated with prosperity and good fortune.1,2
Common observances include charity, fasting and prayers to Vishnu, Lakshmi and Kubera, and many people buy gold or silver or begin new ventures on the day, believing that what is acquired or begun then brings lasting good fortune.1,2
Hindu tradition associates the day with the birth of Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, and with the beginning of the Treta Yuga.1,2
For Jains it marks the day the first Tirthankara, Rishabhanatha, ended his long fast by accepting sugarcane juice.1,2
When it falls: Akshaya Tritiya falls on Tritiya, the third day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Tritiya) of the lunar month Vaishakha, in April or May.1,2
